Last year’s meet (EZ2019Y) favored boys at the expense of girls, and older athletes at the expense of younger ones. A 13-14 was expected to qualify for 1.6 times as many events as a 10/Under and an 11-12 boy for 1.6 times as many events as an 11-12 girl.

This year’s meet (EZ2020Y) also favors boys at the expense of girls and older athletes at the expense of younger ones.  A 13-14 is expected to qualify for 1.7 times as many events as a 10/Under and an 11-12 boy is expected to qualify for 1.5 times as many events as an 11-12 girl.

Overall EZ2020Y is more fair to 14/Unders than EZ2019Y but less fair than EZ2018Y. A 14/under boy is expected to qualify for 1.16 times as many events as a girl in EZ2020Y, versus 1.21x in EZ2019Y and 1.12x in EZ2018Y.

The fairest age group in EZ2020Y is 13-14, where girls and boys are expected to qualify for similar numbers of events.  The least fair is 11-12, where a boy is expected to qualify for 1.5x more than a girl.

The easiest 10/Under event in EZ2020Y is the 100 breaststroke, for both boys and girls.  The most difficult is the 100 IM; previously it was the 50 breaststroke.

All 10/Under events in EZ2020Y favor boys at the expense of girls.  The most unfair are the 100 IM and 200 freestyle, where a boy has more than 1.3x greater likelihood of qualifying than a girl.

The fairness of seven 10/Under events has improved in EZ2020Y relative to EZ2019Y, with the 50yd freestyle improving the most. Only two 10/U events are less fair in EZ2020Y, and only by a small amount.

The easiest 11-12 events in EZ2020Y are the 50 freestyle for boys and 500 freestyle for girls. The most difficult 11-12 event is the 200 breaststroke for boys and 200 backstroke for girls.

All 11-12 events in EZ2020Y favor boys at the expense of girls.  The most unfair are the 200 backstroke and 50 breastroke, where a boy has 1.9x greater likelihood of qualifying than a girl.

Twelve of the fifteen 11-12 events are more fair in EZ2020Y than they were in EZ2019Y, with the 50 free improving the most. Only the 100 IM became substantially more unfair.

The easiest 13-14 event in EZ2020Y is the 50 free, for both boys and girls.  The most difficult are the 1000 and 1650 freestyles.

13-14 is the only age group in EZ2020Y where not all events favor boys.  The two breastroke events favor boys at the expense of girls while the two backstroke events favor girls at the expense of boys.

Eleven of the fifteen 13-14 events are more fair in EZ2020Y than they were in EZ2019Y, with the 100 back improving the most. Only the 100 and 200 breastroke are less fair in EZ2020Y than they were in EZ2019Y.

Thirty three of the forty one events in @eastern_zone Short Course Age Group Championship are more fair than in 2020 than they were in 2019, four substantially so.  Only one event is substantially less fair (11-12 100 IM).

TL;DR While @eastern_zone short course age group championship meet is more fair in 2020 than in 2019, it still favors 12/U boys at the expense of girls.  The least fair age group is 11-12, where a boy is expected to qualify for 1.5x as many events as a girl.
